About SCEA

SCEA is a 501 c 3 non- profit corporation founded and chartered in December 2001. SCEA's office movedJune 1, 2011 to the Padilla Bay Reserve located at 10441 Bay View Edison Road, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. The new office and site is made possible by a cooperative agreement between SCEA and the Washington State Department o f Ecology.

SCEA is governed by a Board of Directors. Board members include representatives fromSkagit County Public Health Department, Skagit County Public Works, the Skagit Conservation District, National Park Service, Taylor Shellfish Company, and citizens interested in water quality issues.

Corinne Story was elected SCEA president at the January 16, 2011 Board of Directors meeting. Corinne is the Environmental Health Program Manager at the Skagit County Public Health Department. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science with a minor in Public Relations from Washington State University in 1980. She started working at the Skagit County Health Department in 1986, primarily in the food and living environment program. In 2001, Corinne took her current position. She has lived in Skagit County for nearly 30 years, where she and her husband have raised two daughters. She enjoys sailing, hiking, gardening, and letterboxing!

Lin Folsom was elected Vice-president at the January 16, 2011 Board of Directors meeting. Lin has been on the Board since March 2010 and comes with a career in water quality and recent volunteer training with the WSU Beach Watchers program. Her concern about water quality began 70 years ago when her father complained he had to fix the septic system that drained into Long Island Sound. Professionally Lin worked for 12 years collecting and analyzing river samples monthly on the St Vrain River in Boulder County. She worked for the City of Longmont running their EPA approved pretreatment program and in 1988 the City of Lynnwood WA hired her to do their pretreatment program as well. Lin has taught water quality classes to Master Gardeners and most recently has become involved with the Watershed Masters Storm Team.

SCEA's Board of Directors also includes Kristi Carpenter, Treasurer, Skagit Conservation District; Rick Haley, Skagit County Public Works; Bill Dewey and Nicole Hopper, Taylor Shellfish; and Cindy Bjorklund, National Park Service.

The Board of Directors in their strategic planning meeting held March 9, 2011 established the following goals for the coming year:

  • Educating and involving community members in minimizing their personal contribution to water pollution through:
    • A water quality festival.
    • Water quality small grants program ($200 - $500 for school groups?)
  • Inspiring friends and neighbors to lead by example in protecting water quality.
  • Maintaining and improving collaboration between conservation groups and agencies.
  • Support volunteer activities.
  • Establish a conservation education center.
  • Maintaining and improving community support for non-point pollution programs.
